<image:title>“Fallen through the cracks”</image:title>
<image:caption>Dasmen Brown stands outside a North Carolina state prison in Raleigh, North Carolina. Released in 2023 after more than a decade behind bars for armed robbery, the 34-year-old owns his mistakes—but his trajectory was shaped long before that. His adoptive mother, Theresa, says his fetal alcohol exposure was never disclosed, and his intellectual disabilities were ignored by schools. “Teachers saw just another Black boy who didn’t care,” she said. “He fell through every crack.” For too many men of color, developmental disabilities go undiagnosed and unsupported—until the prison system takes over, not to help, but to contain, she said. While incarcerated, Daz trained as an electrician and hoped to find work as an electrician’s apprentice. After his release, he found re-entry into society difficult. He chose to live on the streets rather than continue to live with his mother and look for work as an electrician. "I think he gave up on living. It was like his life didn't matter to anyone who could have helped him – but didn’t.” His body was discovered on the side of a road near Raleigh in July, 2024. His death is under investigation.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Living Along the Autistic Spectrum</image:title>
<image:caption>Ben and Sam Schwenker, now 8 years old, were both diagnosed with autism when they were 18 months old. "Raising them is a daily challenge. We were so not prepared, but we learn more every day, " says Jennifer, the boys' mother. Autism spectrum disorders cut across all lines of race, class, and ethnicity. Autism impacts millions of children, adults, and their families around the world. Boys have a significantly higher incidence of autism than girls: four out of every five people with autism are male. Because of the genetic link, siblings of a child with autism have a greater chance of being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Autism spectrum disorders affect not only the person diagnosed with the disorder, but also make a significant impact on the entire family with a variety of social, financial, and other practical demands.PICTURED: Now 8 years old, Sam (in yellow) and Ben still spend much of their day after school and weekends on their trampoline. <image:caption>NOLA SAYNE'S profoundly disabled son ZACH was only ten years old when she was forced to make the gut-wrenching decision to place him in a nursing home. She was unable to find a facility in Georgia where they lived. The closest skilled-care facility that would accept him was 200 miles away from home.Nola thought about quitting her job as a paralegal, but she was a single mother then with two kids. She needed her salary, and she needed the health insurance for Zach. The state of Georgia would pay nothing if Zach lived at home. But it offered to pay the full cost of a nursing home. For the last 15 years of Zach's life, Nola made that 400-mile round trip every two or three weeks. And when he got sick, she took leave from her jobs to stay with him.Zach died January 5 in the nursing home.Nationwide, more than 6,000 children live in nursing homes, with thousands more who are in their 20s, experts said.PICTURED: As time approaches for Nola to leave she says 'I love you, Zach.'</image:caption>

These protections include the designation of critical habitat—land on which habitat-damaging activity and development by government agencies and private citizens would be prohibited, and the banning of ''taking,'' trapping, or killing the monarchs. She and her family are relieved that her transgender diagnosis and treatment began when it did, as Georgia’s new law that restricts medical treatment for transgender youth under 18 begins July 1. “If I hadn’t been able to live as I truly am I don’t think I’d be alive now,” she said.
